(Getty Images)more pics » Christian Bale (Getty Images) Thanks to a stunning perfomance and physical transformation in The Fighter, Christian Bale has taken home the award for Best Supporting Actor at the 2011 Academy Awards.
Bale was coming strong off awards season, taking home the Screen Actors Guild award and the Golden Globe in the run-up to the Oscars. His compeition was fierce, including such heavyweight talents as Geoffrey Rush, Mark Ruffalo, and Jeremy Renner.
Holding the statue -- his first Oscar -- Bale said, "Bloody hell. What a room full of talented and inspirational people, and how the hell do I belong with you?" He joked about co-star Melissa Leo, who won the award for Best Supporting Actress, jibing her: "I'm not gonna drop the F-bomb like she did. I've done that plenty of times before."
Christian also thanked the real life Dicky Ecklund and Mickey Ward, whose lives were the basis for The Fighter.
The 83rd Annual Academy Awards were held February 27, 2011 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. James Franco and Anne Hathaway hosted the festivities, which honored the best films of 2010. The Kings Speech went into the evening leading the pack with 12 nominations, while True Grit, Inception, and The Social Network followed close behind.
